Possible Treatment on Chronic Hepatitis - Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan 2008/4/1

The famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Formula - Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan (also known as Chia-Wei-Hsiao-Yao-San) - is traditionally indicated for the treatment of stagnation of liver-qi, deficiency of blood, and disharmony between the liver and spleen. It is widely used by TCM doctors to treat symptoms such as PMS, depression, irregular menstrual cycle, insomnia, and anorexia.

A clinical study, carried out in National Yang-Ming University, School of Medicine, Taiwan, demonstrated the possible effect of Jia Wei Xiao Yao Wan (JWXYW) at treating chronic hepatitis. The research proposes that liver diseases were closely related to the lung, gallbladder and spleen meridians, especially spleen, and hence, JWXYW was chosen to be the remedy for this trial.

The study involved 80 chronic hepatitis patients, characterized by SGOT (serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) and SGPT (serum glutamic pyruvaic transaminase) levels above normal. The administrations of both JWXYW and placebo lasted for a period of three months; the blood samples were acquired again after the testing period. The results showed that the patients in JWXYW group had decreased levels of SGOT from 47.5+31.3 IU/L to 39.8+26.7 IU/L along with decreased SGPT readings from 72.0+52.7 IU/L to 57.8+42.5 IU/L (p<0.01), whereas, the placebo showed no significant improvements in both readings.
